Once you know your Day Master, the next question in BaZi is how strong it is. A strong Day Master and a weak one call for opposite advice, and the element that best restores balance is known as the Yong Shen (用神), the "useful god". This guide explains the idea, shows exactly how Fate Hall makes its simplified judgement, and is honest about where that method stops.
Strong and weak
Your Day Master is one of the five elements. Every other character in the chart either supports it or drains it. Two kinds of character support it: those of the same element (the Friend and Rob Wealth among the Ten Gods) and those of the element that generates it (Resource). Three kinds drain it: the element it generates (Output), the element it controls (Wealth) and the element that controls it (Officer).
A chart with plenty of support has a strong Day Master: confident and self-driven, but at risk of stubbornness or too much of one thing. A chart with little support has a weak Day Master: sensitive and responsive, but easily stretched. Neither is better. The aim in BaZi is balance, so the advice for the two is reversed.
How Fate Hall weighs the chart
Classical BaZi judges strength with many rules: the season of birth, the hidden stems inside each branch, roots, combinations that change elements, and special chart structures. Fate Hall uses a deliberately simple version that you can check by hand. Each of the eight characters counts as one point for its element, except the month branch, which counts double because the season of birth has the strongest single influence on the chart.
| Position | Stem | Branch |
|---|---|---|
| Year | 1 | 1 |
| Month | 1 | 2 |
| Day | 1 | 1 |
| Hour only when the birth time is known | 1 | 1 |
Add the points for the Day Master's own element and its Resource element. If that support is at least half of the total, Fate Hall calls the Day Master strong; otherwise weak. The result is labelled "a simplified reading" in the app, and it is exactly that.
Two worked examples
The first chart belongs to someone born at noon on 15 May 1990 in Seoul, with a Metal Day Master. Metal has three characters of its own and one of Earth (its Resource), but the month branch 巳 is Fire, the element that controls Metal, and it counts double.
| Element | Where it appears | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| WoodWealth | — | 0 |
| FireOfficer | 午 year branch, 巳 month branch ×2, 午 hour branch | 4 |
| EarthResource | 辰 day branch | 1 |
| MetalSame element: Friend, Rob Wealth | 庚 year stem, 辛 month stem, 庚 day stem | 3 |
| WaterOutput | 壬 hour stem | 1 |
| Support | Metal 3 + Earth 1 = 4 of 9 (half is 4.5) | Weak |
| Month branch counted once | 4 of 8 | Strong |
| Element Fate Hall suggests | Fewer of Resource and the same element by count: Earth 1, Metal 3 | Earth |
This example shows why the month weight matters: counted once, the support would be exactly half and the chart would be called strong. With the month counted double, the summer Fire tips it to weak. A weak Metal Day Master is helped by Earth (Resource) or more Metal; of those two, Earth is the scarcer in this chart, so it is the element Fate Hall suggests.
The second chart, born at noon on 2 March 1988, has a Fire Day Master born in a Wood month — Wood feeds Fire, so the season itself is support.
| Element | Where it appears | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| WoodResource | 甲 month stem, 寅 month branch ×2, 甲 hour stem | 4 |
| FireSame element: Friend, Rob Wealth | 丙 day stem, 午 hour branch | 2 |
| EarthOutput | 戊 year stem, 辰 year branch, 辰 day branch | 3 |
| MetalWealth | — | 0 |
| WaterOfficer | — | 0 |
| Support | Fire 2 + Wood 4 = 6 of 9 (half is 4.5) | Strong |
| Month branch counted once | 5 of 8 | Strong |
| Element Fate Hall suggests | Fewest of Output, Wealth and Officer by count: Earth 3, Metal 0, Water 0 | Metal |
Here the Day Master is clearly strong, so the helpful elements are the ones that use up its energy: Earth (Output), Metal (Wealth) and Water (Officer). Metal and Water are both missing; Fate Hall picks the first of the tied candidates in the fixed order Output, Wealth, Officer, so it suggests Metal.
What Fate Hall does with the result
| Verdict | Ten Gods that help | Elements |
|---|---|---|
| Strong Day Master | Eating God, Hurting Officer, Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth, Seven Killings, Direct Officer | Output, Wealth, Officer |
| Weak Day Master | Indirect Resource, Direct Resource, Friend, Rob Wealth | Resource, same element |
The strength judgement feeds into several tools. In the Luck Pillar and yearly forecasts, a ten-year or yearly pillar whose Ten God is on the helpful list scores higher. On the BaZi page, the suggested element sets the lucky colour, direction and numbers, using the traditional associations below:
| Element | Colours · numbers | Everyday ideas |
|---|---|---|
| WoodEast | Green3, 8 | Taking walks, growing houseplants, starting something new to learn |
| FireSouth | Red, purple2, 7 | Getting some sun, exercising, meeting people |
| EarthCenter | Yellow, beige5, 10 | Regular meals and sleep, a saving habit |
| MetalWest | White, gold4, 9 | Tidying up, making decisions, metal accessories |
| WaterNorth | Black, navy1, 6 | Reading, meditation, drinking plenty of water |
Yong Shen in classical practice
In traditional BaZi the Yong Shen is chosen with much more care than a count of characters. A practitioner considers whether the chart is too hot or too cold and needs "climate adjustment" (調候), whether one element dominates so strongly that the chart should "follow" it rather than resist it (從格), and how combinations and clashes change the balance. Two experts can disagree about the useful god for the same chart. Fate Hall's method captures the basic logic — support versus drain, with the season given extra weight — but it is a starting point for reflection, not a professional assessment.
Common questions
Why is my chart called weak when my element appears most often? Strength is about support, not just count. Your own element may be common, but if Resource is missing and the month branch drains you, the total support can still fall below half.
Does a missing element mean I need it? Not necessarily. Fate Hall lists missing elements, but the suggested element is chosen from those that help your Day Master, so a missing element that would drain a weak Day Master is not recommended.
Does the birth time matter? Yes: the hour pillar adds two characters. Without a birth time the judgement is made from six characters, which can change the verdict in a close chart.
