Why does birth time need correcting? ▾

Solar time, not clock time. In BaZi the hour pillar, and the day pillar near midnight, follow where the Sun actually was. Clock time is set for a whole time zone, so at your birthplace the Sun may cross the meridian earlier or later than clock noon. We use the longitude of your birthplace to correct for that, and can also add the equation of time (from −14 min in February to +16 min in November).

Daylight saving time is taken from your browser’s time zone database for the birth date, so summer-time births are converted to standard time automatically.

Whichever basis you pick, the “Pillars under each time basis” panel shows every combination side by side. If they differ, choose the one closest to the time on your birth certificate.

Everything is calculated in your browser. Your details are never sent to a server; if “Remember” is on they are kept only in this browser’s storage. Privacy policy ·

About food compatibility

Traditional East Asian thought links the five elements to tastes, colours and seasons: sour with Wood, bitter with Fire, sweet with Earth, pungent with Metal and salty with Water. This page uses your BaZi chart to suggest tastes, ingredients and cooking methods that are traditionally said to balance you, and, if you add a partner, how your tables match.

How it is calculated

Fate Hall counts the elements in your chart, finds the element that would balance it, and draws on the classic five-element correspondences to describe foods and flavours associated with it. Seasonal notes follow the same system.

An important note

These suggestions come from a cultural tradition, not nutrition science. They are not dietary or medical advice; if you have allergies, a medical condition or a special diet, follow your doctor’s or dietitian’s guidance.

Common question

Why does my partner’s chart matter at the table? The traditional idea is that two people sharing meals also share their elements. Fate Hall compares your balancing elements and suggests dishes that suit both, which makes a fun starting point for planning a meal together.
