Marriage joins two families, and in many households the relationship with a mother- or father-in-law shapes daily life as much as the marriage itself. Korean readers have long checked in-law compatibility alongside a couple's own match. Fate Hall's in-law reading compares your chart with your parent-in-law's — or, from the other side, with your son- or daughter-in-law's.
In-laws in classical BaZi
Classical texts find in-laws through the spouse star. For a woman, the husband is read from the Officer star, and the element that feeds the Officer — her Wealth star — stands for his mother. That is why Korean folk readings say "a woman's Wealth star is her mother-in-law". For a man, the wife is read from the Wealth star, and the element that feeds it — his Output star — is traditionally linked to her mother.
Fate Hall's in-law reading does not rely on these symbolic stars. It compares your Day Master directly with the other person's, so the result is about the two of you rather than about your chart in general.
When they are your parent-in-law
The easiest position is the one where your in-law's element feeds yours: they shelter and help you, much like a parent. The hardest is usually the one where your element controls theirs, which tends to show up as a quiet contest over who runs the household.
| Their Day Master is your… | Score | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Peer starsFriend (比肩) · Rob Wealth (劫財) Same element as yours | 72 | You and your parent-in-law talk as equals. Because it is relaxed, keep the courtesies. |
| Output starsEating God (食神) · Hurting Officer (傷官) Your element generates theirs | 70 | You are the one who looks after and pleases your in-law. When it gets heavy, share the load with your spouse. |
| Wealth starsIndirect Wealth (偏財) · Direct Wealth (正財) Your element controls theirs | 58 | You may clash over who runs the household. First agree that each household makes its own decisions. |
| Officer starsSeven Killings (七殺) · Direct Officer (正官) Their element controls yours | 60 | Your in-law sets expectations and standards. If the demands feel heavy, raise it gently through your spouse. |
| Resource starsIndirect Resource (偏印) · Direct Resource (正印) Their element generates yours | 84 | Your in-law shelters and helps you. Show thanks for that help in words and small gifts. |
When they are your son- or daughter-in-law
From the older generation's side, the warmest position is the one where your element feeds theirs: the newcomer opens up as you look after them. The patterns to watch are the ones where you control their element, which can feel like interference, and where they control yours, which can feel like your ways are being questioned.
| Their Day Master is your… | Score | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Peer starsFriend (比肩) · Rob Wealth (劫財) Same element as yours | 72 | You and your child-in-law talk as equals. Because it is relaxed, respect the boundaries of each other's households. |
| Output starsEating God (食神) · Hurting Officer (傷官) Your element generates theirs | 84 | They open up as you care for them. Offer help only when it is wanted. |
| Wealth starsIndirect Wealth (偏財) · Direct Wealth (正財) Your element controls theirs | 58 | You may be tempted to weigh in on how they run their home. Give advice only when asked. |
| Officer starsSeven Killings (七殺) · Direct Officer (正官) Their element controls yours | 60 | Your child-in-law disagrees with your ways. Accepting the newcomer's ways is what eases things. |
| Resource starsIndirect Resource (偏印) · Direct Resource (正印) Their element generates yours | 70 | Your child-in-law looks after and helps you. Say thank you often. |
Two families, two ways of life
| Area (read from) | When it scores high | When it scores low |
|---|---|---|
| Family background and first distanceYour Year branch × their Year branch | Your backgrounds and values fit well. | You grew up differently. Ask about each other's family ways first. |
| Way of lifeYour Month branch × their Month branch | Your daily and working rhythms match well. | Your daily rhythms differ. Agree in advance how you will keep in touch, meet and make plans. |
| Opening upYour Day branch × their Day branch | Your inner feelings line up, so trust comes easily. | Your inner feelings easily cross. Talk about any hurt the same day. |
| RolesWhich Ten God their Day Master is to you (see the table above); +6 when your two Day Masters form a Stem Combination | Your roles divide naturally. | Agreeing roles out loud will cut down on friction. |
| Filling each other's gapsElements that one of you lacks and the other has | Each of you supplies an element the other lacks, so together you are more balanced. | Your elements overlap. It is fine to get help from someone else for what you both lack. |
| Handling conflictClashes, Yuan Jin and punishments between your year, month and day branches | Even when you clash, you make up quickly. | With clashes, Yuan Jin or punishments in the chart, friction may be frequent. Sleep on big decisions before making them. |
- Family background and first distance comes first in this reading because it is the first thing in-laws notice. It compares your Year branches, the layer of family and background.
- Way of life compares the Month branches: daily habits, how a home is kept, what counts as normal.
- Opening up compares the Day branches — how readily you trust each other with personal matters.
- Handling conflict counts clashes, Yuan Jin and punishments, the patterns behind the classic in-law argument.
Making it work
Almost every in-law tip in folk tradition comes back to boundaries. Each household decides its own matters; help is offered rather than imposed; and difficult messages travel through the spouse who belongs to both families. Your result's "watch out" note tells you which of these deserves the most attention. If tension in the family is serious, a family counsellor is the right next step.
Common questions
Does it matter whether it is my mother-in-law or my father-in-law? The comparison is the same for either. Enter the person you want to understand, and choose "my parent-in-law".
We are not married yet. Is it worth checking? Many families check in-law compatibility before a wedding. Use it to prepare, not to decide: the couple's own relationship matters more than any in-law score.
Is this only for Korean families? No. The method is the same for any family; Korean tradition just has a particularly long habit of asking the question.
