Plum Blossom (梅花易數) is a way of consulting the I Ching without coins or stalks, traditionally credited to the Song dynasty philosopher Shao Yong. The hexagram is built from numbers — the date and hour when a question arises, or numbers that come to mind — and the answer is read from the relationship between two trigrams, the body and the use.
With the time method, the year branch, lunar month and lunar day give the upper trigram; adding the double hour gives the lower trigram and the moving line. With the number method, your first number gives the upper trigram, the second the lower, and their sum the moving line. Fate Hall shows the primary, nuclear and changed hexagrams and compares the elements of the body and use.
The Plum Blossom guide works through Shao Yong’s famous plum-blossom example step by step.
