Nine Star Ki (九星氣學) is a system of nine "stars" — One White Water through Nine Purple Fire — handed down in Japan and across East Asia. Each year, month and day is ruled by a star, and your principal star comes from your year of birth.
The year begins at the Beginning of Spring, as in BaZi. The nine stars move through a magic square of nine palaces, one for each direction and the centre, and a new star takes the centre each year. Your principal star’s position on this year’s square is read as the theme of your year, and the directions around it as favourable or to be avoided.
Nine Star Ki is often used alongside feng shui for timing moves and travel. Treat the yearly position as a mood — a year in the centre is traditionally busy and visible, a year in the north quiet and inward — rather than a fixed outcome.
