Ask most people for their star sign and they will give you their Sun sign. A birth chart, though, starts with three placements read together: the Sun, the Moon and the Rising sign, often called the "big three". This guide explains what each one describes, why two of them need your birth time, and how Fate Hall finds them.
Three placements, three questions
- The Sun sign is the sign the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. It describes your core sense of self: what you are trying to become and what makes you feel most like yourself.
- The Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in at the moment of birth. It describes your emotional life: what comforts you, how you react before you think, and what you need from the people close to you.
- The Rising sign (the Ascendant) is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at that moment, seen from your birthplace. It describes your outward style: first impressions, the way you start things, and the "front door" through which people meet you.
A common shorthand is that the Sun is who you are, the Moon is how you feel and the Rising sign is how you come across. The three often pull in different directions, and that is the point: a fiery Aries Sun with a careful Virgo Moon and a gentle Libra Rising tells a very different story from someone with all three in Aries.
The twelve signs
Each sign belongs to one of four elements and one of three modes. The element describes the kind of energy — Fire is active and enthusiastic, Earth practical, Air social and mental, Water emotional and intuitive. The mode describes how that energy moves: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs keep them going, mutable signs adapt and change them. Every sign also has a ruling planet that colours its character.

The dates above are the usual Sun sign dates. The exact moment the Sun enters a sign shifts by up to a day from year to year, so if you were born on the first or last day of a range, a calculated chart is more reliable than a date table. Fate Hall works out the Sun's real position for your birth moment rather than looking it up by date.
Why the Moon sign needs care
The Sun takes about a month to cross a sign, but the Moon crosses one in roughly two and a half days. On more than four days in ten, the Moon changes sign at some point during the day, so the Moon sign depends on the time of birth. When you leave the birth time blank, Fate Hall calculates the chart for noon and shows a note that the Moon sign may be different if you were born early in the morning or late at night.
Why the Rising sign needs time and place
Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs pass over the eastern horizon in about 24 hours — roughly two hours each on average. In practice the time is far from even. Some signs rise steeply and stay on the horizon for nearly three hours; others rise at a shallow angle and pass in under an hour. Which signs are quick and which are slow depends on how far you are from the equator, and it flips between the northern and southern hemispheres.
| Rising sign | Seoul 37.6° N | London 51.5° N | Sydney 33.9° S |
|---|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | 1:15 | 0:52 | 2:23 |
| ♉︎ Taurus | 1:30 | 1:09 | 2:25 |
| ♊︎ Gemini | 1:56 | 1:46 | 2:19 |
| ♋︎ Cancer | 2:21 | 2:31 | 1:58 |
| ♌︎ Leo | 2:29 | 2:50 | 1:33 |
| ♍︎ Virgo | 2:27 | 2:50 | 1:20 |
| ♎︎ Libra | 2:27 | 2:50 | 1:20 |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | 2:29 | 2:50 | 1:34 |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | 2:20 | 2:31 | 1:58 |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | 1:57 | 1:46 | 2:19 |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | 1:29 | 1:08 | 2:25 |
| ♓︎ Pisces | 1:16 | 0:53 | 2:22 |
These times come from the same Ascendant formula Fate Hall uses for your chart, run minute by minute over one day for three cities. In London, Aries and Pisces rise in under an hour, so a birth time that is off by twenty minutes can change the Rising sign. In Sydney the pattern is reversed. This is why Fate Hall asks for the city as well as the time, and leaves the Rising sign and the houses out of the chart when the time is unknown.
Reading the three together
A useful way to combine them is to treat the Sun as the main character, the Moon as the inner voice and the Rising sign as the costume and stage manner. Some practical tips:
- Compare elements. If all three share an element, that quality is strong and obvious. If they are spread across elements, you may recognise different "modes" of yourself in different settings.
- Look at the ruling planet of your Rising sign. Astrologers call it the chart ruler. Where it sits in your chart, and which house it occupies, adds a lot to the picture.
- Notice when the Moon and Sun disagree. A Sun in an outgoing sign with a Moon in a private one often describes someone who is sociable in public but needs a lot of quiet time to recharge.
How this fits with BaZi
Western astrology and BaZi both start from the moment of birth, but they divide the sky differently. Western signs follow the Sun's path through the constellations' traditional segments; BaZi uses the solar terms to set the months and the sixty-day cycle to name each day. Your BaZi Day Master plays a role similar to the Sun sign — the core self — while the hour pillar, like the Rising sign, depends on your birth time. Fate Hall shows both side by side, so you can see where the two traditions agree about you.
Common questions
Is my Rising sign the same as my "Ascendant"? Yes, the two names mean the same thing: the degree of the zodiac on the eastern horizon at birth.
Does Fate Hall use the tropical or sidereal zodiac? The birth chart uses the tropical zodiac, the standard in Western astrology, where Aries begins at the spring equinox. The Vedic astrology tool uses the sidereal zodiac, which is currently about 24 degrees behind.
How accurate are the positions? Planet and Moon positions are calculated with published approximate formulas and are accurate to about a degree. That is plenty for signs, but if a planet sits within a degree of the edge of a sign, a specialist ephemeris may place it in the neighbouring sign.
