The twelve life stages describe how strong a Heavenly Stem is in each of the twelve branches, using the metaphor of a life: conception, birth, growing up, the peak of adulthood, decline, rest and rebirth. They help answer a simple question in any reading — is this energy just starting, at full strength, or fading?
A life cycle for every stem
Classical astrology imagined each element's energy moving through twelve phases as the seasons turn. Wood, for example, is "born" in the Hai (Pig) month at the start of winter, grows through spring and peaks in the Mao (Rabbit) month, then weakens through summer and autumn. Each stem has its own starting point. Yang stems move forward through the branches; yin stems, which are said to thrive where their yang partner fades, move backward.
| # | Stage | Chinese | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Birth | 長生 | Energy rising like new life. Beginnings and growth go smoothly. |
| 2 | Bath | 沐浴 | A time of cleansing and refining. Mood swings and temptations come along, but your senses come alive. |
| 3 | Crown | 冠帶 | Crown (Guan Dai): putting on the cap and sash of adulthood. A strong drive to achieve, and you care how things look. |
| 4 | Coming of Age | 建祿 | Earning a steady salary. The strength to stand on your own skills. |
| 5 | Peak | 帝旺 | Energy at its peak. Great drive, but be careful not to go it alone. |
| 6 | Decline | 衰 | Past the peak and settling down. Experience and steadiness are your strengths. |
| 7 | Illness | 病 | Where energy weakens. Sensitive and thoughtful. |
| 8 | Death | 死 | A time to stop moving and look inward. Focus and caution. |
| 9 | Tomb | 墓 | The storehouse where seeds are kept. Good at saving, preserving and studying. |
| 10 | Extinction | 絕 | A turning point where old ties break off and new ones form. Sensitive to change. |
| 11 | Conception | 胎 | Energy newly conceived. Full of potential, with some dependence on others. |
| 12 | Nurture | 養 | A time of being nurtured. You grow under others' protection and are blessed with good people around you. |
The descriptions in the last column are the same ones you see on Fate Hall's BaZi screen. The Chinese names are given because English translations vary from book to book; what matters is the position in the cycle.
Lookup table
Find your Day Master on the left and a branch across the top — for example your own four branches, or the branch of this year or of a Luck Pillar. The table is generated from the same function Fate Hall uses, so it always matches your chart.

How the stages are used
- In your chart: the stage of your Day Master in the month branch is one sign of how strong it is. A Day Master at Birth, Coming of Age or Peak in the month of birth is supported by the season; one at Illness, Death or Extinction relies more on the rest of the chart.
- In the day branch: the stage in your own day branch is often read as how comfortable you feel in your private life and closest relationship.
- Over time: each Luck Pillar and each year also has a branch, and so a stage. Fate Hall's life-path chart uses this, together with the Ten Gods, to draw the rise and fall of each ten-year period.
Don't take the names literally
"Death", "Tomb" and "Extinction" sound alarming, but they describe the quieter phases of a cycle: stopping, storing and letting go before something new is conceived. The Tomb is also a storehouse where resources are kept. Every stage has a use, and a chart that sits in a "quiet" stage can be steady, thoughtful and good at saving rather than unlucky.
Common questions
Why do some books give yin stems the same stages as yang stems? One school lets yin and yang stems of the same element share a single cycle. Fate Hall follows the more common school in which yin stems run in reverse, which is why, for example, Yi Wood is at Birth in Wu (Horse) rather than in Hai (Pig).
Is the stage the same as the strength of my Day Master? It is one ingredient. Fate Hall's strength estimate also counts how many characters support or drain your Day Master, with the month branch weighted double.
