Why does birth time need correcting? ▾

Solar time, not clock time. In BaZi the hour pillar, and the day pillar near midnight, follow where the Sun actually was. Clock time is set for a whole time zone, so at your birthplace the Sun may cross the meridian earlier or later than clock noon. We use the longitude of your birthplace to correct for that, and can also add the equation of time (from −14 min in February to +16 min in November).

Daylight saving time is taken from your browser’s time zone database for the birth date, so summer-time births are converted to standard time automatically.

Whichever basis you pick, the “Pillars under each time basis” panel shows every combination side by side. If they differ, choose the one closest to the time on your birth certificate.

Everything is calculated in your browser. Your details are never sent to a server; if “Remember” is on they are kept only in this browser’s storage. Privacy policy ·

About Vedic astrology

Jyotisha, the traditional astrology of India, uses the sidereal zodiac — tied to the fixed stars rather than to the seasons — so planets usually appear in a different sign from Western astrology. It gives special weight to the Moon and to the 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions the Moon passes through.

How it is calculated

Fate Hall calculates the Moon’s position at your birth, subtracts the ayanamsa (the drift between the two zodiacs, about 24 degrees today) and finds your Moon sign (rashi) and birth nakshatra. Today’s Tara Bala compares your birth nakshatra with today’s to rate the day, and the Compatibility page uses the traditional eight-part Ashtakoota score.

Reading it well

Your birth nakshatra is often considered as personal as your Sun sign in Western astrology. Read its traditional qualities as a reflection, not a fixed fate.

Common question

Why is my Moon sign different from my Western one? Because of the precession of the equinoxes, the sidereal zodiac has drifted about 24 degrees from the tropical zodiac used in the West, so most people — roughly four in five — find their Vedic Moon one sign earlier.
