Most of us spend more waking hours with a manager or a team than with our family. BaZi's view of a working relationship centres on authority and trust: does direction flow naturally between you, do you communicate well day to day, and does each of you help the other grow? Fate Hall's work reading answers from either side — when the other person is your boss, and when they report to you.
Authority in classical BaZi
In the Ten Gods, the Officer stars — the element that controls your Day Master — stand for authority: employers, institutions, rules and reputation. The Direct Officer is the fair, structured kind; Seven Killings is the demanding, high-pressure kind. The Resource stars, the element that feeds you, stand for teachers and mentors. On the other side, the Wealth stars — what your Day Master controls — describe what you manage, and the Output stars describe what you produce and teach.
When they are your boss
A boss whose element controls yours fits the classic picture of authority: clear expectations, and trust earned by meeting them. A boss whose element feeds yours is more of a mentor. The trickiest pattern is the reverse one, where your element controls your boss's: you may find yourself trying to steer someone who is supposed to be steering you.
| Their Day Master is your… | Score | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Peer starsFriend (比肩) · Rob Wealth (劫財) Same element as yours | 64 | You and your boss feel like peers. Easy-going, but the line of authority blurs and opinions clash easily. |
| Output starsEating God (食神) · Hurting Officer (傷官) Your element generates theirs | 72 | Your work feeds your boss's results. Make your contribution visible and you will be recognised. |
| Wealth starsIndirect Wealth (偏財) · Direct Wealth (正財) Your element controls theirs | 56 | You may find yourself trying to steer your boss. Offer opinions with evidence, and leave the decision to them. |
| Officer starsSeven Killings (七殺) · Direct Officer (正官) Their element controls yours | 84 | Your boss sets the standard and you follow — the most natural workplace position. Keep to the rules and you earn trust. |
| Resource starsIndirect Resource (偏印) · Direct Resource (正印) Their element generates yours | 86 | Your boss is like a mentor who teaches and promotes you. You grow as much as you learn. |
When they report to you
For a manager, the most rewarding positions are the ones where your element feeds or directs your team member's: you teach and they grow, or you delegate and they deliver. A team member whose element controls yours will question your methods — irritating at times, but often exactly the push-back that prevents mistakes.
| Their Day Master is your… | Score | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Peer starsFriend (比肩) · Rob Wealth (劫財) Same element as yours | 64 | You and your team member feel like peers. Easy-going, but instructions can get blurry, so define roles clearly. |
| Output starsEating God (食神) · Hurting Officer (傷官) Your element generates theirs | 86 | Your team member grows with what you teach — a rewarding position for a manager who likes to develop people. |
| Wealth starsIndirect Wealth (偏財) · Direct Wealth (正財) Your element controls theirs | 84 | Delegating and leading come naturally here. Give them the credit and they will follow you even more readily. |
| Officer starsSeven Killings (七殺) · Direct Officer (正官) Their element controls yours | 56 | Your team member questions your methods. It can feel tiresome, but often it is the push-back that prevents mistakes. |
| Resource starsIndirect Resource (偏印) · Direct Resource (正印) Their element generates yours | 70 | Your team member supports you and fills the gaps — likely to become a reliable right hand. |
Communication, trust and growth
| Area (read from) | When it scores high | When it scores low |
|---|---|---|
| Leading and followingWhich Ten God their Day Master is to you (see the table above); +6 when your two Day Masters form a Stem Combination | Your roles divide naturally. | Agreeing roles out loud will cut down on friction. |
| Work communicationYour Month branch × their Month branch | Your daily and working rhythms match well. | Your daily rhythms differ. Agree in advance how you will keep in touch, meet and make plans. |
| TrustYour Day branch × their Day branch | Your inner feelings line up, so trust comes easily. | Your inner feelings easily cross. Talk about any hurt the same day. |
| GrowthHow much of each person’s Resource element (the one that feeds the Day Master) the other person carries | You have a lot to learn from each other. | You each have a clear path of your own rather than much to teach each other. Name one of their strengths at a time. |
| Filling each other's gapsElements that one of you lacks and the other has | Each of you supplies an element the other lacks, so together you are more balanced. | Your elements overlap. It is fine to get help from someone else for what you both lack. |
| Handling conflictClashes, Yuan Jin and punishments between your year, month and day branches | Even when you clash, you make up quickly. | With clashes, Yuan Jin or punishments in the chart, friction may be frequent. Sleep on big decisions before making them. |
- Work communication compares the Month branches, the layer of routine and social life. A Six or Three Harmony here usually means meetings that run smoothly.
- Trust compares the Day branches. At work, this is the difference between a manager you can be candid with and one you manage carefully.
- Growth looks at whether each of you carries the other's Resource element, the element of learning and support. A high score suggests a relationship where both people develop.
Using the reading at work
A compatibility reading should never be used to hire, fire, promote or assign people — those decisions belong to skills, performance and fair process. Where it can help is in understanding yourself: why one manager's style energises you and another's drains you, or why a particular report needs more context than others. Take the "watch out" note as a hint about where to over-communicate.
Common questions
My boss and I score low. Should I change jobs? No reading can answer that. A low score points at the area where friction is most likely, which is often fixable with clearer expectations or a different way of communicating.
Does this work for teachers and students, or coaches and athletes? Yes. Any relationship where one person directs or teaches the other fits the boss–team member pattern.
What about colleagues at the same level? For peers, the friendship or business partner reading is usually a better fit, since neither of you is in charge.
